    Before departure and start of the semester

    The International Office of the University of Würzburg offers further important information before your stay in Würzburg: Before your departure, as well as a checklist

    • Here, you will find the deadlines for your application, enrollment, and re-enrollment  as well as other important dates: Fristen und Termine.
    • The information session takes place on the first Monday of the lecture period. This meeting is obligatory for every Erasmus student. Details can be found further below under “arrival”.
    • In order to receive all information, you can enroll in our WueCampus-course. You will find the WueCampus-course here. It is required that you have already received your login-details from the computer center (Rechenzentrum) of the University of Würzburg.

    1. Finding courses in the course catalogue

    You may enroll in the following courses:

    • Courses of the Institute for German Philology (German Studies) can be found here.
    • Courses of the Language Centre can be found in the course catalogue of the language centre.
    • Courses from all other faculties (this is also possible without problems): see this overview.


    2. Entering your selected courses into the Learning Agreement

    • If the course is a German Philology course, you can find the course number (course code), the course title (component title), and the number of the ECTS to be acquired (number of ECTS credits to be awarded) in the course overview at the bottom of the page. This information is to be filled in Table A (see here).
      If you wish to attend other German Studies courses that are not listed in the overview, please use the following table as a guide for the amount of ECTS credits: ECTS-overview.
      Depending on the level of difficulty and the effort involved in the examination, fewer points may be awarded. The exact number of ECTS points must always be agreed with the examiner at the beginning of the course/event together with the type of examination. Changes to the original plan must be stated in the Learning Agreement during the mobility.
    • For courses offered by the Language Centre, take the relevant  information for Table A from the course pages on WueStudy.
    • When attending courses of other institutes, please contact the respective Erasmus coordinators for finding out the offered courses and ECTS credits

    4. Enrolling in courses via WueStudy

    If courses require an enrollment (applies to all seminars at the institute for German Philology), please register on the course pages on WueStudy. The procedure is explained in this video-tutorial.

    It is not required register for the exams of your chosen courses at the Institute for German Philology.

    An informative meeting that is obligatory for all Erasmus students takes place on the first Monday of the semester (winter term WS 2024 on October 14th, 2024, start: 2pm). We will meet in practice room 11 at the Institute for Philosophy. You will also find the informative meeting under this link  and in the course catalogue as well.

    If you are discontent with your choice of courses in the Learning Agreement before the mobility, you have the opportunity to change courses during your first weeks in Würzburg,. Please fill in the modification in the LA during the mobility and have it signed by the responsible person at your home university and the subject coordinator in Würzburg (to be reached via programmstudium_incoming@germanistik.uni-wuerburg.de).

     

    It is highly adviced that you visit Dr. Markus Hien at least once for consultation at the start of the semester.

    We recommend that all Erasmus and programme students take part in the GastStuBe (guest student support) exercise, which takes place on Wednesday evenings. We would like to teach you the basics for successful study at our institute - including the preparation of presentations and term papers - and deal with selected topics from the subject area ‘German Language and Culture’. 

    The course includes e.g. an Introduction into german youth language, and the local music scene, a visit to the theatre and a field-trip. Please enroll via WueStudy.

    The students' representative council of the University of Würzburg represents the interests of the students at the university and also offers a wide range of parties, cultural and informative events.

    On the homepage of the Centre for Languages (Zentrums für Sprachen) you will find, among other things, the course program of this semester as well as information about intensive courses, the conditions of participation and information on the exams.

     

    This map of the city ​​​​​​ was developed by Erasmus students for future Erasmus students and lists the most beautiful places that are a must-see for students from abroad. It contains, for example, the best clubs, the best cafes, etc.

     

    Course overview

    We at the Institute of German Philology can particularly recommend the following courses to our Erasmus and programme students. Of course, all other courses offered by our department and our faculty are also available to you. Please note the following:

    • Students who wish to take courses in German Studies must have B2 knowledge (exception: Museology and Ethnology: B1).
    • The module names and ECTS points displayed on ‘WueStudy’ do not apply to you as an Erasmus and programme student in the case of German Studies. The ECTS credits will be determined with you on a course-specific basis according to your requirements and the agreed examination performance (see the examples below).
    • If you wish to attend other German Studies courses that are not listed in the overview, you can find them in the course catalogue. For the ECTS credits of these courses, please refer to the following table: ECTS overview. However, if you attend courses in the same module, a maximum of 10 points can be achieved in a module examination.

    Course content:

    In the GastStuBe (guest student support) exercise, we would like to teach the basics for successful study at our institute - this includes, above all, the preparation of presentations and term papers - and deal with selected content from the subject area ‘German language and culture’.     Seminar: Introduction to German Linguistics (2-8 ECTS)

    Content:

    The seminar teaches the analysis and description techniques for examining word levels, e.g. morphological segmentation and classification of single word forms, word formation and flexion morphemes, morphological and semantic analysis of word formation constructions, phonetic and phonological transcription in IPA, graphical realization of phonemes and related orthographic principles.

    Lecture Grammatical Structures of German (1-4 ECTS)

    Content:

    This lectures provides an overview over the syntax of the german language. Its focus lies on the dependency grammar analysis of sentences, e.g using constituent tests to determin the constituents of the sentences, determining dependent and independet constituents, the syntactic funtion and semantics of subordinate clauses, the formal description of the structure of complex sentences

    Studies in German Medieval Literature

    The students are familiar with selected key texts of the German Middle Ages and have the technical and methodological basics as well as basic understanding perspectives for further study of older German literature.     Content:

    The module deals with selected examples of key concepts and components of literary texts (rhetorical forms, structures and terminology, topics and motif history, genre traditions) and their analysis on the basis of selected examples and key questions of literary methods.     Contents:

    The module provides an overview of the epochs, authors and genres of modern German literary history. Authors, texts and contexts that are of central importance for the understanding of literary epochs and themes are dealt with.

    The module consists of two lectures, each with one hour per week (always Wed. 12-13 and Thu. 12-13) and a proseminar (several parallel thematic courses are available). The lectures offer a compact overview of the history of literature from the early modern period to the present day.

    Content:

    Content:

    Through the seminar and several readings, students deepen and complete their knowledge of literary history and learn to look at epochs, authors and topics in the context of humanities and cultural studies.     Didactics and Teaching Methodology

    Content:

    This course concentrates on basic fields of activity, concepts, approaches and methods of the teaching of language, literature and media  as well as their concretisation in regard to the specific tasks that are to be managed at school; acquisition and structures of oral and written language acquisition as well as language and reading socialization and parameters of its influence; domain-specific aspects of teaching through focusing on teaching and learning objectives as well as  competency-based education; implementation of basic knowledge into  lesson sequences.
